Bohemian & Creative Summer Barn Wedding

Bohemian Creative Summer Barn Wedding http://www.pocketsquarephotography.com/

Be still my beating heart. Endless fields of gold, a forever romance and bohemian vibes. Yes this real wedding really does have it all in droves this afternoon folks.

WWW readers Carmen and Anthony were married on the 8th July 2017 at Wedderbrun Barns in Scotland. The barns really fulfilled their relaxed outdoor wedding vision and enabled the pair to get their craft on to create a homemade feel too. They not only hand made the dream catchers, bunting and stationery but the rustic wooden signage too. What a creative couple!

I just have to rave about both Carmen’s dress and the flower arrangements too. Coral peonies were used throughout the florals, with wild bouquets, a boho flower arch for the ceremony and a delicate flower crown for Carmen. Carmen’s perfectly boho gown was by Houghton NYC and I am loving the open back and romantic lace. She looked stunning, as did her maids who wore floral dresses by her side. Be prepared to get lost in these dreamy images by Pocket Square Photography, thanks for sharing them Neil.

THE PROPOSAL | 14 February 2016 – Anthony proposed to me on Valentines Day on a snowboarding trip in Avemore. Even after 10 years together it was still a surprise.

THE VISION | From the very beginning I wanted to create a wedding with a relaxed feel to it but with as much of it homemade as possible. I love being crafty in my day job as a primary teacher and Tony is a bit if a handy man too! So we set out to find a rustic space (as we both love the outdoors), which allowed us to put our personal touches everywhere. We also always saw ourselves getting married outside but in Scotland this was always going to be a long shot (luckily it all worked out).

Finally I tried to keep a bohemian feel in mind when deciding all the bits and bobs along the way.

THE PLANNING PROCESS | When planning we had the difficulty of trying to plan whilst living thousands of miles apart. Tony works as an engineer in Abu Dhabi and I am a full time teacher in the West of Scotland.

So to make things work we split up the jobs very early on and made the most of Anthony’s time off to go and see the big important things. Luckily we both trusted each other enough to do this. I took on the responsibility for decorations, dress, music and stationery. While Tony took on decisions about catering and sourcing some of the bigger props for the day.

We both decided the venue together after travelling up and down the country visiting various barn locations.

On the weeks leading up to the wedding, whenever Anthony was home we spent most days off together in his garage painting and making signs and things to hang everywhere. We were constantly covered in paint but it was all worth it! Now looking back I wish we could do that part again … lots of good music, conversations and excitement about the wedding.

BUDGET | Lets just say we didn’t stick to it. However our biggest bargain was definitely the bridesmaid dresses. They were from ASOS. In the sale for £30 each!

THE VENUE | We viewed about five barn locations in Scotland before seeing Wedderburn. As soon as we were driving through the gates we both got shivers. It has the most beautiful grounds and fields surrounding it. The castle is very impressive. At first we were just there to see the barns but after our walk round the castle we decided we would save as much as we could to ensure we could use the castle for some parts too. We ended up having our drinks reception there and hired it for guests to stay in after the celebrations.

Wedderburn Barns were perfect for what we had in mind. They have a courtyard where you can marry outside if it stayed dry and then two rustic barns with a stable feel to them. We knew it was the prefect blank canvas for us to be able to add in all our ideas and designs for the décor. We also loved the idea of having a ceilidh in a barn after the meal!

THE DRESS & ACCESSORIES | Dress – Houghton Chante Gown purchased at The Lovers Bride London

Veil –The Lovers Bride London

Shoes – Monsoon

Flower Crown – Myrtle and Bracken

FINDING THE DRESS | I found my Houghton Chante Gown Dress on a trip to London. It was from a beautiful boutique in Soho called The Lovers Bride. It was only the third dress I tried on but it had everything I was looking for in terms of cut and shape and vibe! I never saw myself in a princess gown. In this dress I still felt like myself and I knew it would look fab with a flower crown, which was always how I pictured myself on my wedding day.

A few months after purchasing the gown I decided to get a veil as when else would I get the chance to wear one? My veil was from the same shop in Soho. It also gave be a little bit more modesty during the ceremony, which I liked as the dress did have a fully open back.

My flower crown was made by my florist Myrtle and Bracken and it was her idea to make a feature of the flowers at the back as that was the big statement part of the look.

My shoes were a very last minute purchase from Monsoon. My goal was to be able to dance the night away without sore feet! And I did!

GROOM’S ATTIRE | Kilts for You – Hillington Scotland.

Anthony wore his family tartan and got a custom made jacket and waistcoat from the above store.

THE READINGS & MUSIC | Our theme for the day was all about distance. Anthony and I have been together for 10 years without any breaks but within those 10 years we have spent many months apart with our careers. I taught in Vanuatu for a year while Anthony finished his final year of Uni at home and Anthony has been working overseas in various locations since he graduated. So our day was all about distance and now coming together.

The Readings therefore were: The Wonders of Today – Larry Chengges and Union – John Fulgham.

Music; String Quartet – The Edinburgh String Quartet, Walking down the Aile – Sigur Ros Hoppipolia, Signing the Register – The proclaimers 500 miles (linking to our theme of distance) and First Dance Eva Cassidy – Time after Time.

Cielidh Band – The Macleod Celidh Band

BEAUTIFUL BRIDESMAIDS | Maria – Bride’s Sister, Kim, Heather, Francesca and Clare – Groom’s Sister.

THE FLOWERS | Myrtle and Bracken. They were fab! They decorated the beams in the barn with beautiful coral peonies, created jam jars for the tables, a beautiful flower arch and the bouquets were wild and wonderful.

THE CAKE | Homemade by our Landlord’s best friend! Decorated on the day by us.

THE DETAILS & DÉCOR | We decorated the barn ourselves with the help of our handy groomsmen and bridesmaids.

I spent weeks after school creating dream catchers and bunting and Anthony sourced a lot of wood, logs and pallets for me to create signs with.

I made the stationery myself along with handmade paper cranes.

The groom’s sister also created a beautiful table plan for us using logs and a pyrography pen with each guests name burned on to the logs. As well as making us tablet for our favours.

Tony’s skills came in handy too as he built old fashioned crates and also made all of his groomsmen sgian dubhs by hand.

THE HONEYMOON | We went to the Maldives. After the hectic-ness of the wedding it was perfect to wind down and relax. We spent 9 days snorkelling, swimming and sleeping on hammocks!

MEMORABLE MOMENTS | Anthony surprised me with a video of the children from my class wishing me well on my wedding day. It was played on a projector during his speech and was a huge surprise!

ADVICE FOR OTHER COUPLES | Start off by going to see a wedding fair, I got loads of inspiration from that and it was a good chance to check out vendors!

Also enjoy the planning, you’ll miss it when it’s over!

And don’t sweat about the small things… when you have everyone you love in the one room you won’t even remember the little niggling things that were bothering you before that moment. Just enjoy and feel the LOVE!
